Sybase IQ Powers World’s largest Data Warehouse

File this one under the heading of extreme scalability!

It’s nice when a vendor’s claims can be backed up by some real tests. Records are always made to be broken of course, but as of September 2007 Sybase, Sun Microsystems, and BMMSoft were able to announce that Sybase IQ powers the world’s largest data warehouse by loading over 1 Petabyte of raw data.

Some pretty impressive numbers for those who like statistics:

"...reached a load speed of 285 billion rows per day (3 Million rows per second)"

"...showed an 85% data compression ratio by storing a Petabyte of raw transactional data in less than 260 Terabytes of actual disk space"

And I thought this was a great stat from the Sun press release:

"With one trillion rows of data, the Sun and Sybase data warehouse can hold enough data to track the history of all world financial trades on all stock exchanges or hold enough data to track all credit (and debit) card transactions in the entire world over the last seven years."

Besides all the numbers though, this certainly gives customers the confidence that Sybase IQ has the ability to scale to meet any requirements they are likely to have in terms of database size and number of users, while still maintaining the super fast query times they’ve come to rely on.
