Understanding Analytics Servers

I've had a few questions lately from customers asking how Sybase IQ achieves it's amazing query speeds, and how it compares to the traditional database software and/or data appliances they're currently using.
I came across a short article on the TDWI (The Data Warehousing Institute) website written by Phil Bowermaster, Worldwide Product Marketing Manager for Sybase IQ that summarizes the main considerations for an analytics server very clearly.
Phil describes how an analytics server:
"...stores and accesses data in tables by column. This serves to index automatically the entire database, because query selection criteria are defined by column. This greatly reduces the amount of data that needs to be read to respond to a query and dramatically speeds up response times."
